Pure-play agriculture company Corteva Agriscience has collaborated with Evogene’s subsidiary AgPlenus to develop novel herbicides.

Under a multi-year collaboration, the partnership will combine Corteva’s vitality in crop protection product discovery and development with AgPlenus’ expertise in designing efficient and sustainable crop protection products using predictive biology.

The companies will leverage their complementary expertise to control the rise of global weed resistance

Both companies will leverage their complementary expertise to reduce the upswing of global weed resistance resulted due to the absence of new modes of action (MoAs) for weed control in the last 30 years.

Corteva Agriscience senior vice president and chief technology officer Neal Gutterson said: “So much has changed since the last MOAs were identified in the early 1990s. It’s time to find new solutions; our collaboration with AgPlenus positions us well to do that.”

As per terms of the deal, Corteva will use its comprehensive crop protection research and development expertise, while AgPlenus will apply its advanced computational platform to enhance several of the company’s chemical families.

According to the company, AgPlenus’ chemical families have already been validated for herbicidal activity and are connected to new MoAs.

Corteva has secured an exclusive licence from AgPlenus to commercialise herbicides based on these chemical families.

AgPlenus CEO Eran Kosover said: “This collaboration will focus on optimizing our leading chemical families putting us in an excellent position to pursue our target of developing novel herbicides.

“I am confident that AgPlenus’ unique approach in the development of herbicides, alongside Corteva Agriscience’s extensive scientific and market know-how, will lead to new and sustainable innovation in the herbicides market.”

Recently, Corteva Agriscience has secured approval for its Questar fungicide with Inatreq active to market in France.

Questar fungicide with Inatreq active is a new naturally derived fungicide, which provides curative and protectant control on all Septoria strains.
