Pure-play agriculture company Corteva Agriscience has entered into an exclusive evaluation agreement with Eden Research to assess the use of plastic-free capsules, in a bid to help farmers make agriculture more sustainable.

The deal will enable Corteva to further assess Eden’s Sustaine encapsulation technology and various formulations in biological seed treatment applications in certain major territories.

Eden CEO Sean Smith said: “The potential use of Eden’s active ingredients and Sustaine microcapsules formulation technology in seed treatments has been understood by Eden for some time, but this is the first major opportunity where we have collaborated with a company to fully develop and commercialise a product using Sustaine in this application area.”

Corteva will exclusively assess products that use Sustaine in seed treatments

By the end of 2020, Corteva has to exclusively assess products that use Sustaine in seed treatments. After the evaluation, the company may sign an exclusive distribution agreement for the products in the EU, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey.

The deal represents the first use of Eden products and technology to treat seeds and is also a first step of the company into this area. Sustaine can be used across a range of functional uses and seed types.

Derived from yeast, Sustaine microcapsules are plastic-free and biodegradable micro-spheres that are sourced naturally.

The technology facilitated the safe and efficient use of Eden’s registered active ingredients and helped third parties to improve bioactivity, control volatility and enhance crop safety.

Corteva Agriscience Europe seed applied technologies leader Andre Negreiros said: “We are excited to be working with Eden to offer farmers complete solutions with an environmentally favourable profile.

“As a company committed to sustainability, we are pleased to be using the Sustaine formulation technology to help reduce the use of microplastics in line with consumer expectations.”

In November 2018, Corteva introduced a new integrated technology solution called LANDVisor for ranchers and land managers.

Eden Research provides sustainable solutions for crop protection, animal health and consumer products.
