Canadian company EarthRenew announced that it has been granted approvals to produce fertilisers in the US and Canada.

EarthRenew’s fertiliser formulations were granted approvals under the California Fertilizing Materials Law and Regulations and USDA National Organic Program standards.

The US product certifications permit the company to sell its organic fertiliser products in the sizeable California market, EarthRenew said.

EarthRenew had also received approval from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to market and sell its newly developed fertiliser formulation in Canada, which includes biochar.

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance producedcontrolled process called pyrolysis by burning organic material from agricultural and forestry wastes (also called biomass).

The company claims that by mixing biochar with its organic fertiliser pellet manages odour, helps retain nutrients and moisture in the soil and provides an additional source of carbon.

The company aims to begin production at its Alberta plant

With the approval, the company can begin the sale of its organic fertiliser products across Canada once its plant in Strathmore, Alberta begins production.

EarthRenew CEO Keith Driver said: “Successfully navigating these regulatory processes ensures EarthRenew has access to key markets for the distribution and sale of our fertilizer products across North America in the future.

“We will continue to work on the development of our organic fertilizer products to ensure that we meet the needs of organic farmers, home gardeners and landscapers.  The addition of biochar provides a particular value-add for our products in the organic markets.”

EarthRenew claims to continue the redevelopment of the fertiliser production facility in Strathmore. This process is expected to include additional field trials with the revised formulations for next year and redevelopment of the facility in time to deliver products by spring 2021.

The company also generates sustainable power from a 4MWh rated industrial natural gas turbine located in Strathmore.

Its homegrown technology claims to capture waste heat from the turbine to produce high-value concentrated organic fertiliser from animal manure.
