Digital agricultural solutions provider Farmers Edge has introduced new automated hail detection and reporting technology for growers and insurance professionals.

Provided via FarmCommand digital platform, the new severe weather detection, notification, and reporting tool will offer in-depth reports with critical information needed by insurance professionals to make evaluations and take action rapidly.

Farmers Edge’s technology is said to combine field-centric weather data, machine learning, daily satellite imagery, and crop health change detection into one easy-to-use management tool.

The technology allows insurance professionals to view active hailstorms, follow storm paths, and monitor when storms reach fields where their growers have existing policies.

Automatic notifications are generated to alert growers, agents, and adjusters to critical information such as fields affected, location, crop stage, and extent of the damage following the hail event.

A crop health change map serves an additional layer of field-level analytics for assessment and claims management activities.

The tool allows insurance professionals and growers to access real-time, historical, and 10-day weather forecasts to detect and track risks

The tool will help insurance professionals and growers to access real-time, historical, and 10-day weather forecasts to detect and track risks  with the support of an advanced severe weather monitoring system and Farmers Edge Advanced Weather Network of on-farm stations,

With an email notification, the growers and insurance professionals will be alerted in the morning after a hail event happens.

The notification integrates with advanced reporting features in FarmCommand that detail the hail event rated by severity, time, location, size of affected areas, and the stage of the crop impacted.

Crop adjusters can view the damage by seeing imagery from before and after the event to make an evaluation and take action.

Farmers Edge CEO and co-founder Wade Barnes said: “One of the challenges to developing accurate models and reports is not just the amount of data required, but the quality as well; this is where we saw an opportunity to help and tackle this gap in the industry.

“By layering what we’ve built—the highest quality data sets available—with powerful digital tools, insurance professionals can refine their claim reporting process and deliver premium services to their customers.”

In March, Farmers Edge entered into an exclusive and three-year partnership with crop protection company Nufarm Brasil to digitise around three million acres of farmland in Brazil by 2023.
