Locus Agricultural Solutions (Locus AG) and Nori have formed a new partnership which will focus on developing a pathway for farmers to monetise carbon harvesting.

The two companies stated that by giving incentives to farmers to grow such crops which can remove carbon from the air by using the most advanced nature-based technology can turn out one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions into one of the largest sinks to combat climate change while increasing food security.

Farmers to receive carbon credits for the amount of CO2 sequestered

Farmers, who work with Locus AG and Nori this year and those who have been practicing regenerative agriculture since 2010, can sell their resulting carbon credits at $15 for every ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestered.

After this year, the price will be set by the open market. Starting from 2023, the even bigger payout could be expected, based on the amounts of carbon that can be sequestered by using Locus AG’s Rhizolizer line of customised soil amendments.

Locus AG chief agronomist Paul Zorner said: “We could not be more excited about partnering with Nori to immediately monetize regenerative farming practices to benefit growers—and the entire planet.

“This collaboration takes advantage of Locus AG’s immediately scalable microbial solution that can be used to treat tens of millions of acres here and abroad and can make a significant impact by putting carbon in the soil where it belongs.”

Claimed to spearhead the use of microbials-in-agriculture, Locus AG is developing customised soil ‘probiotics’ that can supercharge soils’ ability to sequester carbon by an additional nine metric tons of CO2 equivalents per acre annually.

Nori uses the COMET-Farm carbon and greenhouse gas accounting system supported by the US Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Coupled with Locus AG’s products such as Rhizolizer, the carbon estimation approach can help in realising future carbon payments.

Nori CEO  Paul Gambill said: “Working with Locus AG is an exciting start for us to help us scale our platform quickly and reward farmers for practices that will draw down carbon from the atmosphere.

“Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for farmers to get paid for taking action to remove and store carbon. We’re thrilled to be working with a group that shares that goal.”
