BlueNalu, a seafood product developer, has formed a strategic partnership with Dutch animal nutrition and aquafeed company Nutreco.

The partnership will build on BlueNalu’s platform technology for producing cell-based seafood products from a wide range of species. The technology is claimed to create a stable and sustainable supply-chain solution as global demand for seafood continues to rise.

Nutreco has deep knowledge of fish nutrition

Nutreco also brings aboard a deep knowledge of fish nutrition, raw materials expertise to the partnership besides offering the knowledge of ingredient procurement at competitive costs.

The company stated that as the global population is expected to increase almost 10 billion by 2050, so does the demand for protein. New innovations such as cell-based seafood could help in meeting the demand in a sustainable manner.

BlueNalu president and CEO Lou Cooperhouse said: “The partnership with Nutreco is another significant milestone for BlueNalu, which will enable our team to accelerate our journey toward commercialization, while also securing a global supply chain partner.

“We expect this will provide significant value to our company, as it is our objective to introduce our seafood products in a test market during the next two years, and launch our products in several global markets by the end of this decade.”

Nutrecoalso claims that its customers face challenges when it comes to delivering feeding the future. The food and feed industry must meet the growing demand for high-quality protein.

Nutreco CEO Rob Koremans said: “Since the global demand for protein is increasing, we need to provide protein from a variety of sources, including traditional aquaculture farming as well as new innovative solutions.

“Nutreco’s strategic partnership with BlueNalu is very exciting as it opens the opportunity to up-scale real seafood production in a highly sustainable way.”

For Nutreco the partnership with BlueNalu comes a week after it collaborated with Mosa Meat, a cell-based meat startup. Such partnerships are expected to increase Nutreco’s commitment to advance science-based innovations for increased sustainability across the value chain.
